Ferro Scanning

Ferro Scanning is a non-destructive testing method used to detect and map the location of steel reinforcement within concrete structures. It is widely used in construction, inspection, and renovation works to ensure safety and avoid structural damage.

Principle: The method uses electromagnetic waves to detect ferrous (iron-containing) materials such as steel rebar within concrete. The variation in the electromagnetic field helps identify the presence and position of reinforcement bars.

Equipment: This assessment is typically carried out using a Ferroscan device such as the Hilti PS 250, which emits electromagnetic signals and captures their reflections from steel elements embedded in concrete.

Procedure: The device is moved across the concrete surface in a systematic manner. The reflected signals are processed to generate a clear visual representation of the reinforcement layout, including the location, spacing, and approximate depth of steel bars.

Applications: Rebar location assessment is used in construction, renovation, and retrofitting projects to prevent accidental damage during drilling, cutting, or core cutting activities. It is also useful for structural evaluation and planning strengthening works while maintaining structural integrity and safety.

Advantages: This method provides accurate and real-time data without damaging the structure. It allows engineers to create 2D or 3D visual maps of reinforcement, enabling precise planning, safer execution, and better decision-making during construction and modification works.
